Engagement: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥Time: 12-18 min
A fun, structured warm-up journey using hula hoops as "vehicles." Students enter, sit on lines, learn the track, practice various locomotor movements, master their personal spots (boys on green, girls on purple), do stretches, play "This or That" and "I See I See," then finish with high-energy Danny Go! back at spots.
TEKS K.1A / 1.1A: Practice proper foot patterns and form while hopping, galloping, running, sliding, skipping, walking; maintain balance. TEKS K.1B / 1.4A: Practice correct technique while jumping... Move in personal and general space to rhythms and beats while maintaining balance.
Character Focus: Patience, listening, and responsibility. Sitting on the correct colored spot teaches following directions and respecting structure. "This or That" choices build decision-making and self-control.
5E Lesson Plan Structure:
- 🔥 Engage: "Road trip!" announcement with hula hoops. Excited walk-and-talk on the track to build buy-in.
- 🔍 Explore: Students experiment with different locomotor "gears" (walk, gallop, skip) while driving their hoop around the track.
- 📖 Explain: Teach spot colors (green for boys, purple for girls), why good form and balance keep the "road trip" safe, and how freezing keeps everyone together.
- 🚀 Elaborate: This or That locomotor choices, I See I See listening game, return to correct spots, finish with energetic Danny Go! movement songs.
- ✅ Evaluate: Can students name their spot color, demonstrate 2-3 clean locomotor patterns, freeze safely, and transition calmly back to spots?
K: Heavy teacher modeling. Short track segments. Focus on 2-3 basic locomotors (walk, gallop, run). Lots of celebration for correct spots and freezes. Use Danny Go! for joyful closure.
1st: Introduce skipping and side-to-side jumps. Add simple rhythm with the hoop (tap, lift). "I See I See" can include color or shape spotting for cross-lateral and visual tracking practice.
