Locomotor Freeze Warm-Up (Around the Track)

🏃 Locomotor Freeze Warm-Up (Around the Track)

K-4
🔥🔥🔥🔥Time: 6-10 min
Students practice locomotor skills (skipping, galloping, two-stepping, running) while traveling the track and responding to freeze commands. Builds proper foot patterns, balance, speed control, and immediate listening response. After the track, return to spots for stretches and exercises. (Often paired with walk & talk entry ~10 min before whistle + clap → colored spots.)
Focus TEKS (by grade):
K: Proper foot patterns & form while hopping, galloping, running, sliding, skipping, walking; basic balancing & sequencing.
1st: Correct technique hopping/galloping/running/sliding/skipping + quarter turns; balance on one foot 5 sec with varied leg positions.
2nd: Apply correct technique in locomotor skills; maintain balance on one foot 8 sec; differentiate non-locomotor actions.
3rd-4th: Demonstrate & apply correct technique in dynamic activities; intermediate balancing with equipment; sequencing multiple skills with repetition.
Character Focus: Self-control & listening. Freezing on command teaches patience, respect for the teacher, and responsibility for personal and group safety. Waiting patiently on spots builds discipline.

5E Lesson Plan Structure:

  • 🔥 Engage: Quick demo of different locomotor skills around the gym with big energy and a "freeze!" surprise to hook attention.
  • 🔍 Explore: Students travel the track using 2-3 locomotor skills, practicing safe freezing when signaled.
  • 📖 Explain: Teach proper form (foot patterns, arm swing, upright posture), why balance matters, and the importance of the freeze response for safety.
  • 🚀 Elaborate: Add speed changes, directional cues, or "two-step" challenges. Return to spots for targeted stretches that match the skills practiced.
  • ✅ Evaluate: Observe correct technique, quick & balanced freezes, and ability to follow multi-step directions back to spots.
K: Focus on walking, galloping, running with big exaggerated form. Short track loops. Lots of positive freeze praise. 5-6 min.
1st: Add skipping and two-step. Introduce quarter turns on freeze. Balance challenges on the way back to spots.
2nd: Apply correct technique with more speed variety. 8-second one-foot balance holds during stretches.
3rd: Dynamic track with changes of pathway/level. Add light equipment for balance (e.g. bean bag on head during walk).
4th: Lead small groups, create their own locomotor combinations, coach peers on form during the cool-down stretch phase.
