Engagement: 🔥🔥Time: 2-3 min entry + 5-7 min stretches
Entry Procedures (review every class):
• Walk into gym and sit on your spot and wait patiently for directions.
• Take care of the restroom and water before class.
• Check your shoes and clothing (tie laces, proper attire).
Key Expectations: Know and follow all class Rules. Respond quickly and safely to Freeze Commands. Respect personal space and listen carefully.
❄️ Freeze Commands: When the teacher gives the freeze signal, students stop movement immediately, freeze in balanced position, and listen for the next direction.
TEKS: K-4.1 (locomotor/body control), K-4.2 (cooperation/safety), K-4.3 (rules).
Character Focus: Discipline, listening, responsibility, and Panther Pride through consistent routines.
5E Lesson Plan Structure:
- 🔥 Engage: Quick freeze signal practice at the door with exaggerated “freeze like a statue” modeling to hook attention and set the tone for listening.
- 🔍 Explore: Students enter, find their colored spot (boys green / girls pink), sit quietly, and practice one freeze command together.
- 📖 Explain: Review the three entry procedures verbatim, key expectations, and why freeze commands keep everyone safe. Connect to class rules (voice level 1-2, equipment pride, no food/drink/gum, safety first for equipment/shoes/bodies/words).
- 🚀 Elaborate: Walk-through of full arrival flow (restroom/water first, spot check, quiet waiting). Role-play what “wait patiently” and “balanced freeze” look like. Praise Panther Pride examples.
- ✅ Evaluate: Observe who arrives ready, sits correctly, and freezes immediately. Quick verbal check: “What are our three entry steps?” Celebrate responsibility.
K: Teacher at door modeling every step. Visual spot pictures. 1-2 freeze practices max. Heavy praise for sitting and waiting. Short reminders.
1st: Students self-check shoes/laces. Introduce voice level chart. 2-3 freeze drills. Pair buddies for spot finding.
2nd: Students lead a peer through the routine. Add “report any issues” responsibility. Full freeze with balance hold 5 sec.
3rd: Student leaders help remind peers of procedures. Discuss why each rule exists. Add “equipment pride” examples during entry.
4th: Students create their own “Panther Perfect Entry” checklist. Peer coaching on freeze form. Leadership in modeling for younger classes if visiting.
🦁 PANTHERS Stretches & Exercises (Coach Odom’s Exact Commands)
After walk & talk / locomotor (students quiet). Use these exact commands at colored spots:
• Ready Exercise – Spell P-A-N-T-H-E-R-S while doing jumping jacks.
• Arm Circles Forward – Silent count (count to 10 in your head).
• Reverse
• Elbow over the top – Switch
• Swimmers Stretch
• Elbow out in Front – Switch
• Feet Apart – Stretch toward the playground, then switch to the cafeteria.
• Reach Back between your feet
• Figure 4 stretch – Switch
• Butterflies
• Ankle rolls – ~20 seconds (Kinder & 1st: tell them to switch halfway through).
• 10 push-ups (Kinder skips) • 10 curl-ups (Kinder skips) • 10 squats (Kinder skips).
TEKS: K-4.1C (non-locomotor), K-4.2 (body control & safety), fitness components.
Character Focus: Self-control, listening, and responsibility. The transition from social walk-and-talk to quiet focused stretching teaches students to switch gears and be ready to learn. Spelling “PANTHERS” builds school pride.
5E for Stretches:
- 🔥 Engage: “Ready Exercise – spell PANTHERS!” with big energy jumping jacks to start the stretch routine with school spirit.
- 🔍 Explore: Students follow along with each stretch using the exact verbal cues while teacher demonstrates form.
- 📖 Explain: Proper form for each (e.g. quiet counts, full range, knees bent on squats). Why we stretch (injury prevention, focus). Kinder skips last three exercises.
- 🚀 Elaborate: Add balance challenges during ankle rolls or figure 4. Link specific stretches to locomotor skills practiced on the track. End with brain break “PE This or That” (~5 min YouTube) before main activity.
- ✅ Evaluate: Observe form, participation, and ability to follow multi-command sequence. Debrief: “Which stretch helped your legs after the track?”
