K-4Movement Skills 20–30 min Hula Hut Knockdown (3-Hut Version)
Description
The class is split into two teams, one on each side of the gym. Each team starts with 3 hula hoop huts already built on their side. Players throw soft balls to try to knock down the other team’s huts. A knocked-down hut can be rebuilt by that team. If all 3 of a team’s huts are knocked down at the same time (before they can rebuild any), that team loses and the game is over. Great teamwork, throwing accuracy, defense, and quick rebuilding!
Equipment
Equipment: 36+ hula hoops (6 per hut × 3 huts × 2 teams), soft foam balls or yarn balls for throwing, cones or tape to mark the midline
Character Focus
Perseverance & Teamwork
“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor. If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.” – Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
When a hut falls, we jump in and rebuild together. We never give up on our team.
“I Can” Statement
I can work with my team to knock down the other team’s huts while protecting and quickly rebuilding our own, and I can stay positive even when a hut falls.
5E Lesson Plan
engage
🔥 Engage (3–4 min) Gather students at the midline. Show a completed hula hut and say: “Today each team has three hula hoop forts (huts) on their side of the gym. Your job is to throw soft balls and knock down the other team’s huts. If one of your huts gets knocked down, you can (and should!) rebuild it as fast as possible. But… if all three of your huts are down at the same time, the other team wins and the game is over. Ready to protect your forts and attack theirs?” Quick demo of how to build a hut (1 base hoop on the floor + 4 leaning walls + 1 roof on top) and how to knock one down with a soft throw.
explore
🔍 Explore (12–18 min) Split the class into two equal teams (one on each half of the gym). Pre-build (or have teams quickly build) 3 hula huts on each side, spaced out safely. Mark a clear midline that no one may cross. Scatter soft foam/yarn balls on both sides. On the signal, players throw from their own side to try to knock down the opposing huts. Protectors may stand near their own huts (but cannot touch the balls while they are in the air or block unfairly). As soon as a hut is knocked down, that team’s players may run over and rebuild it. The game continues until one team has all 3 of its huts down at the same moment. That team loses the round. Reset the 3 huts and play another round (or best of 3).
explain
📖 Explain (2–3 min) Freeze the class. Ask: What strategies helped you knock huts down faster? How did your team decide who protects and who rebuilds? Why is it important to rebuild quickly instead of only attacking? Reinforce: “We win as a team when we protect, attack, and rebuild together.”
elaborate
🚀 Elaborate (3–5 min) Challenge options (choose 1–2): Only underhand throws allowed. One “super protector” per hut who must stay within an arm’s length of the hut. Silent rebuild – no talking while rebuilding. Add a fourth hut or start with only 2 huts for a faster game. After a hut is knocked down, the rebuilding team must complete a quick exercise (5 jumping jacks) before they can rebuild.
evaluate
✅ Evaluate Observe: Are students staying on their own side of the midline? Are they rebuilding fairly and quickly? Are they using safe throws and good teamwork? Quick verbal check or thumbs-up: “Who helped rebuild a hut today?”
Grade Modifications
K
K–1 Use only 2 huts per side. Teacher or helpers help rebuild. Soft underhand rolls only (no overhand). Shorter rounds and more frequent resets.

2nd
2nd Standard 3-hut rules. Allow more time for rebuilding. Focus on teamwork over speed.
3rd
Strict midline rule and “no crossing” enforcement. Faster rebuild expectation. Add positions (protectors, destroyers, rebuilders) that students can choose and switch. Keep score of rounds won.
