Pirates of the Caribbean

Pirates of the Caribbean is a high-energy team throwing game. Each team has a pirate ship (tumbling mat) with 5 pins (treasure/cannons) set up in front of it. Soft foam balls are the cannonballs. Students on the ship throw at the other teams’ pins while one teammate rides a scooter (lifeboat) to retrieve balls from the ocean (gym floor). Students may only take one step into the ocean — anything farther requires the scooter. When all 5 of a team’s pins are knocked down, that ship sinks. The last ship with pins still standing wins the round. Once a ship is sunk you lose your diver (person on scooter) but you can still try to eliminate ships when balls roll to your area. You cant win but can still attack

Equipment
Equipment Tumbling mats (1 per team – the pirate ships) Bowling pins or foam pins (3 per team) Soft foam balls / gator-skin balls (plenty) Scooters (1 per team – the lifeboats) Optional: Frisbees for older grades
Character Focus
Work together as a crew and protect what is important. Just like pirates had to protect their treasure and help their shipmates, we protect our teammates and work as one team. “Two are better than one… if either of them falls, one can help the other up

How to Play

  1. 1Divide the class into 4–6 equal teams.
  2. 2Give each team one tumbling mat (pirate ship) and set it up in a designated area.
  3. 3Place 5 pins in front of (or around) each mat — these are the team’s treasure/cannons.
  4. 4Give each team 1 scooter (lifeboat).
  5. 5Scatter soft foam balls in the middle of the gym (the ocean).
  6. 6On the signal, students on the mat begin throwing balls at the other teams’ pins.
  7. 7One student per team rides the scooter to retrieve balls from the ocean and bring them back to the ship. Scooter riders cannot throw.
  8. 8Students on the mat may take only one step into the ocean to reach a ball. Any farther and they must use the scooter.
  9. 9When a pin is knocked down, it stays down.
  10. 10When all 3 of a team’s pins are down, that ship sinks (team is out for the round or must do a quick exercise to reset).
  11. 11The last team with at least one pin still standing wins the round.
  12. 12Reset pins and switch scooter riders every round.
  13. 13Safety Look-outs Soft balls only No throwing at heads or bodies — only at pins Scooter riders stay seated and move under control One-step rule into the ocean must be enforced Clear space around each mat so students are not colliding Younger grades: underhand throws only and closer distances

TEKS Alignment

  • 1–4.1A: Demonstrate manipulative skills (throwing)

5E Lesson Plan

engage
“Ahoy, mateys! Today we are pirates sailing the Caribbean! Protect your treasure and sink the other ships!”
explore
Quick partner throwing practice (1–2 minutes) while mats, pins, and scooters are set up.
explain
Demonstrate the one-step rule, scooter retrieval rules, and how a ship sinks. Review safe throwing (no throwing at people).
elaborate
Play 3–5 rounds. Rotate who rides the scooter each round. For older grades, allow frisbees or require overhand throws only.
evaluate
Ask: “What strategy helped your crew protect the pins?” “How did the scooter rider help the team?” Quick form check on throwing technique.
