Kids Heart Challenge Kick-Off

❤️ Kids Heart Challenge Kick-Off

K-4
Time: ~20 minutes
Dates: 1/8 – 1/12

Introduce the Kids Heart Challenge. Discuss what it is, why we participate, thank-you gifts for fundraising, and what to do when parents say “no.”

Key questions to explore together:
• What is the heart’s main function?
• How do the heart and lungs work together?

Practice class procedures and (if time allows) some jump rope skills. Keep the energy high and have fun while building excitement for the week.
TEKS Focus: Heart function & immediate effects of exercise (K-4.4A) • Cooperation and following directions during discussion and practice.
Character Focus: Gratitude (thank-you gifts) and responsibility (what to do when parents say no). Students learn that taking care of their heart is a lifelong gift to themselves and others.

5E Lesson Plan Structure (Kick-Off):

  • 🔥 Engage: Show any Kids Heart Challenge materials or videos. Ask: “Who knows what makes your heart beat faster?”
  • 🔍 Explore: Short discussion in pairs about what they already know about their heart.
  • 📖 Explain: Teach the main function of the heart and how it works with the lungs. Introduce the challenge and fundraising purpose.
  • 🚀 Elaborate: Practice procedures + light jump rope if time. Let students share one thing they’re excited about.
  • ✅ Evaluate: Quick exit question: “One thing you learned about your heart today.”
