Number Line Relay Race
Engagement: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Equipment: Number cards, cones, math worksheets
Time: 25-30 min
Students run to collect number cards and arrange them in correct order (K-1: 1-10, 2nd: 1-20, 3rd: skip counting, 4th: fractions/decimals). Teams must solve math problems at stations before advancing.
PE TEKS: K-4.1A (Locomotor skills), K-4.2A (Teamwork and cooperation)
MATH TEKS: K.2A-K.2G (Number sequence), 1.2A-1.2I (Number relationships), 2.2A-2.2H (Number patterns), 3.2A-3.2D (Number representations), 4.2A-4.2H (Number concepts)
Character Focus: Persistence through challenging problems and teamwork when supporting teammates. Students learn that practice and collaboration lead to mathematical mastery.
5E Lesson Plan Structure:
- 🔥 Engage: Hook activity - Quick warm-up demonstration of number sequences, show excitement for math and movement combined.
- 🔍 Explore: Hands-on discovery - Students try collecting number cards and basic sequencing, explore rules through guided practice.
- 📖 Explain: Teach concepts - Demonstrate proper form, explain math concepts and PE rules, TEKS connections for both subjects, character focus on problem-solving.
- 🚀 Elaborate: Apply/extend - Full relay with complex math problems, leadership roles, cross-curricular connections to real-world math applications.
- ✅ Evaluate: Assess learning - Check understanding of math skills and physical coordination, character development on persistence, TEKS mastery in both areas.
K: Numbers 1-10, walk/jog pace
1st: Numbers 1-20, addition to 10
2nd: Skip counting by 2s,5s,10s
3rd: Multiplication tables, fractions
4th: Decimals, advanced operations
